Merging OLTP and OLAP - Back to the Future (Panel)

The development of hardware and software allows us to think about merging OLTP and OL AP (back) into a single system - from a system point of view as well as from a conceptual point of view. All panelists agreed that there is still the "case for data warehousing" from an application perspective. The major challenge to integrate different data sources and to provide a consistent view is and will be the main factor. Although operational decision-making is gaining more and more in importance, the sheer number of different transactional applications speaks against a single system. Although there may be opportunities for embedding BI into originally transactional applications, the panelists clearly see the trend towards tighter coupling of data-warehouse infrastructures and OLTP systems to deliver real-time Business Intelligence.
