Unleashed by the switchless design of the Internet Protocol, the “cloud” is rapidly becoming the communications paradigm of the 21st Century. From network architecture to applications, communications is racing toward anytime-anywhere-anyway delivery. Can satellite - the world’s technology for long-haul, high-bandwidth communications – compete in this brave new world? Satellite long lagged behind terrestrial services in automated switching and routing. But today, technology convergence and innovation are raising satellite’s game when it comes to connectivity in the cloud. This workshop profiles developments in space and on the ground that are reshaping the core satellite applications of content distribution, networking underserved regions in Asia, and supporting mobility. It also explores the tensions and challenges these developments pose for today’s satellite industry in Asian nations and across the international satellite and media distribution community.
