The Mid Country Refinery Project (MCRP) is a joint venture of Pakistan and Abu Dhabi to be constructed in Distt. Muzzafargarh of Pakistan. Subsoil investigations were carried out first by 3 bore holes, each 30 m deep and then by two additional bore holes, 50 and 75 m deep. Standard penetration tests (SPT) were done in all the bore holes and disturbed as well as undisturbed samples were taken for the laboratory tests. Later on Cone Penetration Tests (CPT) were performed with electric cone in 135 holes to characterize the strata. To find the dynamic properties of soil, cross hole survey was performed upto 39m depth at one meter interval in two arrays. Resonant column tests were carried out in the laboratory to confirm the dynamic design parameters. Electrical resistivity measurements were taken at 3 points to know the corrosion potential of the soil. Laboratory testing comprised gradation analysis, dry density, moisture content, direct shear and triaxial compression tests. The strata comprises predominantly fine to medium sand. It is medium dense upto 20 m depth, dense from 20 to 50 m depth and very dense below it. Angle of internal friction Φ varies from 29°to 41°. This paper describes the tests carried out to characterize the foundation soil for the project.
