A Simulation Study of Lightning Surge Characteristics of a Distribution Line Using the FDTD Method

Recently, the focus of lightning protection for distribution lines has moved to higher overvoltages due to direct lightning strokes. Therefore, the precise prediction of the lightning overvoltages due to a direct lightning stroke is required for appropriate lightning protection measures. In this paper, results of pulse tests which assume the direct lightning stroke to a distribution line are simulated using the FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) method, and comparisons show that the FDTD simulations give sufficiently accurate results.
