It has boon shown that the constrained optimization techniques illustrated in this paper can be utilized to design an optimum actuator which performs closely to theoretical predictions and has a high force/℃/Kg ratio. A more rigorous lumped thermal model will be incorporated into the design procedure as temperature is often the most critical constraint. The technique will also be applied to multiphase brushless dc motors and dc servomotors. Further research will be performed on the use of copper shorted turns in PWM driven high positional accuracy applications.rnThe continuing increase in computational power should make it possible to incorporate finite element analyses within the optimization procedure in the near future. At present, even with lumped parameter magnetic modeling, the design procedure outlined in this paper is computationally demanding, typically requiring over 12 hours of dedicated processing time on a standard 486 machine.
