Dumping of solid wastes of Ankara metropolitan area into Tuzlucayir Landfill site stopped in 1978. Soon after the landfill, completed and covered with earth, population have started in the area. And now, there is a shanty town settled on the top of the landfill area. There are about 1550 people living in 310 shanty houses. After 22 years, the site still has a potential of hazards for the people living there. Leachate generated from the landfill is flowing between the houses and finally discharging into the nearby river Imrahor and polluting it. In this research, 3 investigation wells were opened at different parts of the area, in order to monitor the water quality of the ground water and provide gas venting through these wells. Water samples from these wells were taken at different periods, 1993, 1996 and 2000, in order to see changes in groundwater characteristics. The groundwater level changed depending on the season. The results of this 7 years of monitoring showed that the leachate has the charactersitics of an old landfill, however, degradation of the refuse has not been completed yet and infiltration through the pervious surfaces will cause leachate generation and this generation will continue for some time that rehabilitation works should be started immediately.
