The Advance Photon Source (APS)is a third-rngeneration synchrotron radiation source operating at 7rnGeV that has been in operation for over 10 years.In thatrntime,the emittance has been improve from 8 nm to thernpresent value of 3.1 nm,which is close to the practicalrnminimum.Recently,APS undertook an intensivernexploration of potential upgrades,inclu ing options for arnreplacement storage ring or Energy Recovery Linacrn(ERL)injector.Our conclusion was that only the ERLrnwould provi e a ramatically new capability.This paperrniscusses the potential performance available from anrnERL upgrade to the APS an reviews the challenges ofrndelivering this performance.
