Advances in Subsurface Dripper Clogging Research and Considerations for the Development of SDI in China

Suction of soil particles and root intrusion are two dominant contributors to the subsurface dripper clogging,for which solutions could be classified into two categories.One is improving the management of drip irrigation system and taking some preventive measures to maintain the health of SDI during its installation and running period,the other is developing SDI special drippers which,due to particular structure design,have abilities of avoiding clogging caused either by soil suction or root intrusion.In this article,a variety of preventive measures (such as filter media protection,reflux and chemical injection),working theories and mechanisms of multiform SDI special drippers that appeared in recent years are reviewed and discussed.We suggest that considering the current agricuiturl economic situation in china,consider the management and maintenance of drip irrigation system,rather than the use of special drippers,should be as the main solution for dripper clogging of SDI used in agriculture.
