In recent years there has been a slow increase in electrical demand. Nearly all of this energy istransported over the high voltage transmission system, and traded through the New Zealand electricitymarket, or bilateral contracts. In either case, the flow of energy through the grid is recorded for meteringpurposes at grid exit points for every half-hour trading interval. This record of metering data hasaccumulated since August 1996, and now, after more than five years, presents an opportunity to analysetrends in grid usage. Currently, analysis has been limited to reporting total energy transported, and losses.In this paper the authors describe two new measures of grid usage; the Transport Factor, and theTransport Distance. The Transport Factor measures the minimal energy-distance factor of the grid; it canbe thought of as the transport work done by the grid, as if it were a trucking company. The TransportDistance is the straight-line energy-weighted separation of grid injections from off-takes.
