This paper seeks to explore the dimensions of a strategy for integrated training and education of the maritime profes-sionals of the future. Maritime academies worldwide face the task of training ships' officers by employing different models. Although the American model that is university based treats the training of mariners in a manner similar to pro-fessional education in fields such as engineering and management, aspects of the STCW Code rest upon the longstand-ing apprenticeship model used in Europe and Asia. The American experience in the years after World War II was that experiential training would not adequately prepare individuals to perform in an environment of rapidly developing tech-nology. Faced with enhanced use of information technology in ship operations with more remote and autonomous opera-tion of ships and ports, what are the implications faced in employing various educational models for training mariners, and what will be the interactions of collaborative activities with other aspects of technical and managerial education of transportation professionals?
