Research Evaluation in New Zealand

The public sector and microeconomic reforms since 1984 in New Zealand, leading to the new research, science and technology system and the establishment of the Foundation, were not uniquely New Zealand phenomena. Similar thinking and actions are evident, to a greater or lesser degree, in many countries around the world.rnSimilarly, the growing emphasis on and, in fact, imperative for evaluation of research funding are evident in most science systems. New Zealand is neither significantly ahead of nor behind international developments in this area except, perhaps, in its proposals to establish performance targets for the funding agency itself.
