Scoping the Impact of Modern Information Technology on Intermodal Supply Chain in Japan

This paper addresses the development of intermodal logistics operations as affected by progress in the implementation of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in Japan. It is based on empirical work conducted among a limited sample of Japanese and foreign - owned logistics companies and intermodal transportation stakeholders in Japan during 2004. Intermodal logistics is by nature innovation driven and any advances made with regard to its overall impact on global supply chain will, to a large.extent, depend on the systematic application of new information technology and innovative ideas in its conception, facilities, equipment and operations. Japan has during the last decade aggressively launched ITS as a way of actively utilizing modern information technology to modernize and bring about efficiency in the country's transportation system. Japan ITS system " capitalizes on leading - edge IT to support ... efficient transportation.. . its aim is to achieve a quantum leap in the safety, transport efficiency and comfort of road traffic" ( ITS Strategy Committee report, 2003: 4). This objective falls within the overall framework of the government's "New Comprehensive Program of Logistics Policies" and " e - Japan Strategy" initiatives aimed at transforming the country into " the world's leading nation in IT by 2005" in which "anyone can live safely and comfortably anytime, anywhere, and can choose from a selection of comfortable, convenient transportation modes.
