This abstract discusses an experimental and numerical effort to assess the effectiveness of water-mist for suppressing small fires in large compartments both in earth gravity and, in the future, zero, Moon, and Mars gravity. The simulation tool is a three-dimensional, unsteady, multi-phase code, and will be validated using the experimental data. Initial simulations establish that using mixture transport coefficients and at least a simple two-step reaction mechanism is essential in obtaining correct basic flame shape and unsteadiness. Experimental comparisons are currently beginning and will continue to provide important insight into the level of model detail required for accurate simulations.
