TRACE OBSERVATIONS OF SOLAR SPICULES BEYOND THE LIMB IN LY-α AND CIV

We present a study of spicules from TRACE UV observationsrnin the 1216 ° A (Ly-α) and 1550 A (CIV) bands nearrnthe solar north pole. The structure beyond the limb isrnvery similar in the two lines, where emission extends uprnto 25″and, occasionally, up to 30″. Yet structures in Ly-αu0001rnare wider and have a greater scale height than those inrnCIV . Individual features exhibit ascending and descendingrnmotions with velocities of～30km s-1.
