Provided is a trace/failure observation system capable of comprehensively collecting information required to check a desired operation of a system where the amount of information relating to an object being observed is large and enabling analysis of a desired operation. In a system LSI which is a trace/failure observation object, the trace/failure observation system includes an event detecting means for observing the behavior of an object being observed, a first data reduction means for performing reduction processing of the observation data from the event detecting means so that the observation data reaches the amount of information which can be processed by a second data reduction means, and the second data reduction means for performing reduction processing of observation data involving one or more steps.
