Objective representation of DTM surfaces in scale dimension

Digital terrain model (DTM) (or digital elevation model-DEM) is becoming increasingly important as a type of spatial data in a national geospatial data infrastructure. Such DTM data are normally acquired from large scale sources, sampled with high resolution and measured with high accuracy to meet the requirements as a large scale basic data sets. However, in many applications, smaller scale representation of the DTM data is more desirable and therefore automated techniques need to be developed to derive smaller scale DTM from larger scale DTM.
