USE OF SATELLITE AND GROUND DATA FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECT OF THE 2004 OLYMPIC GAMES TO THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT OF ATHENS

The impact of a major sporting event, such as the Olympic Games, is assessed for the city of Athens whichrnhosted the Olympic Games in 2004. A special indicator depicting the quality of life in an urban environmentrnis defined and applied so as to assess changes prior and after the Olympic Games for Athens. The estimationrnof the indicator is based to satellite and ground data. It is found that several areas of the overall urbanrnagglomeration of Athens enjoy an improvement in the quality of life indicator. This is mostly due to thernhosting of sporting and non sporting Olympic venues as well as due to urban regeneration and transportrnprojects.
