This paper analyzes the application of virtual reality system on the digital city construction in detail, suggesting that the key point responsible for above problems is data. The data format in a virtual reality system is of great significance, including data sharing and data efficiency as a consequence of data format. The current paper studies the data characteristics in the virtual reality system and points out that the data requirement is even higher when the system is used on the digital city. It is required to have the capability of huge data storage and management, and the compatibility of multi-source data; moreover, the data standard in the virtual reality system should be open and scalable. Based on the analysis of data characteristic, the data format in the virtual reality system is examined, especially when the city planning program is concerned. Data processing and data delaminating expression is discussed separately in detail. Finally it simply demonstrated virtual reality application in city planning.
