FPis: A Forest Pest Investigation System With PDA/GIS/GPS

In recent years, the technology of mobile devices such as PDA is developing rapidly, and its integration with GIS and GPS has been successfully applied in the field data collection in many areas. This paper presents the design and implementation of a forest pest investigation system with PDA/GIS/GPS(FPis), it can complete the special requirements in field data collection of forest pest information. The system is composed of two parts, the PDA part and the PC part. The PDA part is used for field navigation and data collection, whereas the PC part is used to communicate with PDA, to prepare fundamental maps for PDA and to process the investigated data. Some key techniques in implementing the system such as raster data organization and vector data indexing are discussed, efficient solutions are obtained. The system is developed with EVC and can be run within WINCE operating system.
