Abstract: Polarization control photonic functional devices based on quantum well structures for application to advanced fiber communications are described. Two promising techniques are discussed: compositional disordering and strained-layer structures. TE/TM mode selective waveguides were successfully fabricated using polarization dependent index changes induced by the cap annealing. Enhancement of TM mode optical gain with tensile-strain enabled realization of high performance polarization-insensitive semiconductor optical amplifiers and superluminescent diodes.!8
