In December 2001, ABS published the Guide for Crew Habitability on Ships [1] and the Guide for Passenger Comfortrnon Ships [2]. Having validated the applicability and usefulness of the habitability and measurement methodology forrnlarge merchant ships, an opportunity was recognized (by listening to ABS clients making specific requests for relatedrnguides) to extend the criteria and methods to smaller vessels, including Offshore Supply Vessels (OSVs), work boats, rnand motor yachts. In order to assess the extendibility of the guide’s requirements and methods to these vessels, a seriesrnof habitability and comfort assessments were performed by reviewing higher standards of comfort, establishing comfortrnrequirements for motor yachts, and subsequently validating the requirements by going to sea. The findings reveal thatrnthe comfort criteria are achievable in luxury motor yachts.rnAs a result, ABS has introduced the new Guide for the Class Notation Comfort – Yacht. This Guide presents guidancernfor measuring the comfort, enjoyment and satisfaction of Owners and their guests while occupying cabins, diningrnspaces, lounges, entertainment areas, and other passenger spaces aboard motor yachts.
