1. The results of laboratory and field experiments have demonstrated good performance characteristics of the acoustic emission/micro-seismic activity method for monitoring the stress state in rocks;rn2. physical models based on the kinetic concept of the rock fracture process allow the possibility for the monitoring and long-term prediction of the behaviour of a rock mass;rn3. the monitoring systems deployed in some mines in the former Soviet Union have shown good operational parameters for the efficient prediction of rockbursts and strong motion events;rn4. the proposed software and system design concept may be applied to the monitoring of stress state in the host rock and structural components of a radioactive waste repository;rn5. the approach could also be used to monitor fracture processes in the near-field, e.g. in blocks of vitrified and solidified radioactive waste.
