According to decommissioning projects feedback, the main reason to decommissioning cost variation is the incomplete knowledge of the initial radiological state. At final clean-up stage, the objective of initial characterization is to define the material thickness to be removed (generally concrete) in order to reach a predefined radiological threshold. The purpose of this paper is to describe the method carried out on the French Atomic Energy Commission site located in Grenoble in order to define a standard layer depth to be treated on concrete surfaces concerned by liquid contamination.
