Intelligetn agents and active databases have a numbe of common characteirstics,the most important of which is tha tthey both execute actions by firin rules upon events occurring provided certain conditios hold.This paper assumes tha tthe knowledge of an intelligent agent is expresed using a set of active rules and proposes a method for optimising the rule-base of such an agent using a Genetic Algorithm.We illustrate the applciability of this mehtod by using ti to opitmise the prformance of a self-adaptive netowrk.The benefits of our approach are simplified design and reduced development and maintenance times of rule-based agents in the face of dynamically evolving environments.
