USOS - A Universal Satellite Operating System well suited for Reuse

The reuse of satellite on-board and ground software reduces the time spent and expenditure of the software development for new projects drastically. Command processing, telemetry generation and analysis, message processing, housekeeping and status data monitoring, and consistency between flight and ground software are standard features common to all satellites and ground stations. The Universal Satellite Operating System (USOS) and the corresponding ground support software (EGSE) developed by OHB in the frame of the ABRIXAS small satelh'te project cover this basic functionality. USOS can easily be adapted to specific user demands, operating systems or processor environments. This paper introduces USOS and reports on the experience gained while reusing USOS in the MITA project.
