Vision Based Navigation (VBNAV) has been identifiedrnas a valid technology to support space explorationrnbecause it can improve autonomy and safety of spacernmissions. Several mission scenarios can benefit from thernVBNAV: Rendezvous & Docking, Fly-Bys,rnInterplanetary cruise, Entry Descent and Landing (EDL)rnand Planetary Surface exploration.rnFor some of them VBNAV can improve the accuracy inrnstate estimation as additional relative navigation sensorrnor as absolute navigation sensor. For some others, likernsurface mobility and terrain exploration for pathrnidentification and planning, VBNAV is mandatory.rnThis paper presents the general avionic architecture of arnVision Based System as defined in the frame of the ESArnR&T study “Multi-purpose Vision-based NavigationrnSystem Engineering Model - part 1 (VisNav-EM-1)”rnwith special focus on the surface mobility application.
