We studied the utilization of fused coal ash slag as fine aggregate for hot asphalt mixtures. Our findings are as follows. (1) We confirmed that the composition of fused coal ash slag is equivalent to that of natural sand and that its safety can be maintained. (2) The physical properties and shape of fused coal ash slag are roughly the same as those of natural sand, and, according to laboratory testing, the properties of an asphalt mixture containing 10% fused coal ash slag aggregate are equivalent to those of a mixture in which no slag is used. (3) Results for experimental pavement using fused coal ash slag show that the workability and the quality of the mixture using slag are equivalent to those of a mixture that used no slag. We also confirmed that, as of nine months after the paving work was done, the performance of the road paved with the mixture containing slag was equivalent to that of the road paved with the mixture using no slag.
