Abstract: The residual mode filter can be used successfully to stabilize spillover modes on a large flexible structure with high modal density. A reduced order model of the PACOSS DTA was developed using modal cost analysis of desired performance then used to develop an estimator and regulator by linear quadratic Gaussian and loop transfer recovery methods. Implementing this controller on the full order system produced spillover instabilities. The residual mode filter was added to the control system without modifying the original controller and stabilized the spillover mode. !5
