Oral Absorption and Importance of Gastro-Intestinal Transit

Gastro-Intestinal (GI) Absorption of drugsrnadministered orally is determined by not only thernpermeability of GI mucosa but also the transit raternin GI tract. Gastric emptying affects the onset ofrnthe absorption and the plasma concentration -rntime profile. Intestinal transit is also an importantrnfactor, because the residence time of drugs in thernabsorption site and even the dissolution of drugsrncould be regulated by the transit rate. Therefore,rnGI transit could substantially change thernabsorption kinetics of drugs administered orally.
