The influence of contact out-gassing on late breakdowns has been studied. Results show that strongly delayed breakdowns can occur for conditions corresponding to those of the left hand side of the Paschen curve. Cold gas breakdown delay times are shown to depend directly and precisely on pressure. Delays of up to 100ms are possible. The late breakdown mechanism is thus not a random phenomenon. The observed scatter of delay times is hence produced by shot to shot fluctuations of the pressure.
