A method for Continuous, On-Line, Real-Time Surveillance (CORTS?) for dangerous microorganisms in water isrndescribed. The current practice for water safety and security depends upon the assumption that microorganisms will be foundrnnaturally in the environment, at low to moderate levels over a long period of time. Most water supplies are sampled weekly,rnor daily at best, causing a wide open window for either naturally occurring or intentional contamination of water byrnmicroorganisms, especially at high concentrations. The Socorro Group has helped pioneer methods for CORTS? operationsrnfor microorganism detection. We will describe the operations and testing of such systems including statistical methods andrnnon-stationary statistical detection.
