ANTIMICROBIAL ADDITIVES IN PAINT APPLIED TO CLEANROOMWALLS

It is common for antimicrobial agents to be added to paint that will be applied to cleanroom walls. This type of paintrnwas used in Nelson Laboratories, Inc. new cleanroom suite during the construction. The cleanroom suite is 3,000 ft 2 and isrnused for contract product sterility testing of pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Due to the types and variety of productsrntested, there is the possibility of seeing a wide range in the environmental bioburden of the suite. Over the past year that thisrnsuite has been fully functional, we have detected a lower number of organisms recovered from the walls in comparison tornother surface samplings in the same area. We attribute this to the antimicrobial paint. We devised a study to challenge thernpaint with a battery of bacteria and fungi and compared the paint's results to basic latex paint and other wall materials. Thernresults of the study are the focus of this paper.
