This paper gives an outline of NOCTARN research activity that aimed at developing and demonstrating a trajectory-based air traffic management and operation system for small aircraft. This research focused on developing technologies to generate and share 4D flight trajectories among aircraft and between air and ground, and to use this information to enable high-density operations and for noise abatement while maintaining pilot workload at the same level as conventional operation. A pilot display, ATC console and data link system have been developed during the course of this research, and a flight experiment involving multiple aircraft was accomplished in the final stage, demonstrating the concept's feasibility.
