摘要

This paper summarizes a research project that creates a model to predict disputes in construction projects. To date, project stakeholders have limited means of controlling disputes during construction operations. The study explores the critical dispute characteristics that are involved with contractual change issues. The research hypothesis holds that there are disputes in the construction process that are predictable, and many dispute cases display specific, identifying characteristics. This paper presents a framework for dispute prediction by defining critical dispute characteristics and building causal relationships among those characteristics. The framework includes identifying dispute characteristics, classifying characteristics, and building a dispute case database. A retrospective dispute case database is the analytic engine used to define critical characteristics and build the causal relationship among characteristics. Content analysis of the cases and statistical analysis of characteristics will be the process used to build a prediction model. This research advances the knowledge of disputes in construction projects and converts active disputes into a positive source of information. This research aims to build a better understanding of disputes in the construction process for every stakeholder.
