PVC profile extrusion is a technology that has been practiced for decades. The formulations encompass a wide range of pigments and fillers and the products are used in every imaginable application. Recent economic and environmental forces are driving the development of a class of cellulosic filled compounds and products using a variety of base polymers. The use of these fillers with PVC is technically challenging due to the thermal limitations inherent in both PVC and cellulosic materials A single step process will be discussed that converts non-dried cellulosic fibers (6-9 wt % moisture) and PVC into compounded pellets or finished extruded forms. The effect of process conditions, particularly moisture removal, on throughout will be presented. Technical as well as commercial issues will be addressed The focus of the presentation will be the need for an integrated manufacturing system to provide the maximum economic return on investment.
