Whilst simulation has developed significantly in the last few years and can eliminate many inappropriate development routes, there remains a need for real, physical prototypes. Vehicle systems, and hence their prototypes, have become increasingly complex over the last few years. Meanwhile, there is increasing pressure on reducing development timescales. Add to this the public demand for an end product which is of higher quality, safety and reliability, all at a lower cost, and this gives clear warnings that the traditional approaches to development, including early prototypes, will have to change if these demands are to be met. This paper considers the use of more formalised approaches to the development of prototypes, considering in particular the role of requirements and safety analysis in the early stages. By using various analysis techniques at a system level, flexibility can be retained whilst maintaining safety.
