摘要

Human performance modelling techniques have been used to provide safety assurance in the design of a large number of safety critical systems. A case study is described evaluating the introduction of new technology for drivers in new rail rolling stock. ATLAS (a task analysis tool that supports human performance modelling and workload analysis) was used to investigate whether drivers could accommodate the additional tasks being incorporated into the new cabs, due to the introduction of the Train Management System (TMS) and additional controls. The ATLAS tool is outlined in the paper along with its method of use to analyse the various cognitive (mental) resources that may or may not compete in various tasks. Competition for resources can result in inefficiencies in task performance or task breakdown. The case for performance modelling is made and its wider applications and impacts on vehicle design are described.
