Modular Telematics Systems

Car Navigation has been successfully introduced to the market but currently remains a high-end feature only showing the vehicle position on the map. Real-time traffic information, emergency-call, Location Based Services and multimedia applications are all emerging under the umbrella name of "Telematics". The Telematics market is extremely diversified, not only driven by the automotive industry players but also by service providers, however it is the acceptance of these services by end-users that is still to be proven. The market for Telematics could reach a potential level of US$20 billion by 2007, including hardware (HW,) software (SW) and services (acc. to Strategy Analytics). Differing from more 'mature' applications such as Car radio, there is no "monolithic" picture of the system configuration. There are high-end solutions on the market already, but what could a cost-effective high-volume solution look like?
