Urbanization and Cultural Identity

The relative share of urban population is rapidly and globally increasing, and is of growing concern for planners, politicians and social scientists. In a majority of the developing countries the steadily increasing urbanization rates is a serious problem. The migration of people from rural towards urban areas leads to the development of slum areas in the fringes of the big cities and creates problems for the urban population already living there. In order to cater for the needs of urban populations there is a constant pressure on local authorities to plan for new, and to rehabilitate old housing areas in the cities.
