Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) can be a valuable tool for underwater search and recovery (SAR) operations. Currently, there are a myriad of ROVs in use in various industries today. There are several different types that range drastically in size, shape and purpose. A dive team needs to give careful consideration when looking to purchase an ROV for SAR operations. There is simply not an ROV in the market that is "the best." Instead, when researching ROVs for a dive team, the best "fit" for the job needed to be performed, and for the areas that will be searched should be examined. The team's budget need also be considered. This article will explain some ways that ROVs can be used in underwater SAR operations, discuss the value of a dive team having an ROV, and give some ideas on how to choose the right ROV for a team.
