Many commercial switches and routers today employ output queueing. The advantages of output queueing are twofold. First, it allows the throughput to be maximized: so long as no input or output is oversubscribed, the switch will support 1 the traffic. Second, because packets are immediately placed in output queues upon arrival, it is possible to control the i latency of packets through the switch. This is very important for supporting QoS in a switch or router. But output queueing is complex and expensive. In this article we discuss gateway queueing algorithms and their role in controlling congestion in multimedia networks. We show difference between most well-known packets queueing algorithms like: FIFO, CQ (Custom Queueing), FQ (Fair Queueing) and CBQ (Class Based Queueing).
