In this paper, we have described two techniques to digitize and automate flow diagnostics. Both techniques utilize CCD cameras and result in phase-maps of the flow-field of interest. The time-resolved Hartmann sensor approach is useful in unsteady flow conditions where it is advantageous to monitor density changes with time. The holographic interferometric approach is also high speed and would typically be applied when one desires a single, high accuracy phase or density measurement. As the cost of CCD cameras and frame grabbers continues to decrease and these techniques become better refined, we believe that video flow visualization approaches will be adopted into the flowfield diagnostic community.
