Acoustic droplet ejection (ADE) can gently and precisely aliquot nanoliter and picoliter liquid volumes without any physical contact with the solution being transferred. A wide variety of solvents, DNA, proteins and live mammalian cells can be dispensed by ADE without detectable loss of activity or viability. Picoliter~R ADE technology couples a transducer to a fluid container, including SBS-standard microplates, to deliver focused acoustic energy into the fluid and induce droplet ejection. For containers holding two immiscible fluids, acoustic energy focused at the fluid-fluid interface generates droplets composed of both fluids. Applications of ADE to solutions, cell suspensions and multi-fluid droplets for small-scale assays and particle formation will be discussed.
