In this paper, the author introduced the first successful trial on 280kA cells using coke powder bake preheat start-up in China. From stuffing the coke powder to pouring electrolyte, the general start-up procedure was illustrated step-by-step and the problems that occurred in each stage were discussed. The current voltage and distributary current during start-up were recorded and the cell temperature field was described in detail, especially the temperature of lining and cathode steel bar. Using this method, we achieved shorter start-up period and less energy spend. The thermal shock and pre-mature failure caused by liquid aluminum during start-up were avoided and the cell service life extended.
