Scientific investigation methods are founding their place besides the stylistic-historical study methods in art research works. In particular, optical techniques, transferred from other fields or developed ad hoc, can make a strong contribution to the safeguarding and exploitation of cultural heritage. This paper describes the use of different optical techniques, such as holographic interferometry, decorrelation, shearography and ESPI, in the diagnostics of works of art. A comparison between different methods is obtained by performing tests on specially designed models, prepared using typical techniques and materials. Inside the model structure, a number of defects of known types, form and extension are inserted. The different features of each technique are outlined and a comparison with infrared thermography is also carried out.
