Server-Less IP Multicast (SLIM) in Stub IP/ATM Networks

Both IETF's Classical IP-over-ATM and ATM Forum's MPOA/LANE take the client-server approach to IP/ATM address resolution. This paper proposes and discussed an alternative approach that more closely emulates the traditional peer-to-peer resolution method in stub IP/ATM networks. The absence of address resolution servers in this Sever-Less IP Multicast (SLIM) scheme improves the portability and the reliability. The entire software is implemented in one piece. rendering (re)configuration easier. And since SLIM does not have servers as single points of failure, the reliability of the system is greatly extended. SLIM achieves these improvements at a comparable complexity as the client-server schemes.
