Rotation of Highly Excited Nuclei: Mass Dependence of Rotational Damping

The #gamma#-decay of the continuum has been measured in two mass regions. The excitation function of the continuum decay as well as spectral shape and fractional Doppler shifts are discussed for both ~(114)Te and ~(164)Yb compound nuclei, and show the typical features of rotational collective motion. Moreover, in both cases an upper limit of #GAMMA#_(rot) is given and the number of decay-paths is determined from the fluctuation analysis method. Simulations based on microscopic calculations of the rotational damping model reproduce quite well the experimental findings for both N_(path) and the scaling of #GAMMA#_(rot) as a function of the mass number.
