This paper presents the results of a strategy implemented in the cast house of a major aluminum rolling mill to reduce emissions of hazardous air pollutant (HAPs), including HCl, Cl_2, dioxins/furans, and metals, through a combination of upstream pollution prevention measures, process modifications, and end-of-pipe controls. End-of-pipe controls are applied to concentrated, low volume emissions from selected sources to minimize the capital and operating costs of the control systems. This is the first integrated upstream/downstream HAP control system of its kind installed at a major aluminum rolling mill in the U.S. Preliminary test results indicate that significant HAP emission reductions have been achieved, as well as concurrent criteria pollutant emission reductions. Detailed test results are expected to be available by December 1996 or January 1997. This mill was recently named the recipient of the Washington State Governor's Award for Oustanding Achievement in Pollution Prevention, largely as a result of the successful implementation of the project described in this paper.
