The microporous activated carbon containing fabrics of various types are used for protective garments world over. The barrier properties of these fabrics are evaluated using simulants of toxic chemicals. The correlation between mustard break through time (HD-BTT) a toxic agent and simulant i.e. 1,3 Dichloropropane (DCP) penetration time has already been established. In this work the effect of faults i.e. holes tears and open seams on the barrier properties of the fabric was evaluated by creating artificial holes. The carbon powder containing foam fabric has been chosen for creating artificial holes in this study. The defected fabric was evaluated for HD-BTT and DCP penetration time. The effect of no. of holes and hole size was evaluated on the performance of the fabric. The study reveals that for defected fabric simulant gives higher misleading results compared to mustard, an actual agent.
