Nonlinear input-output linearizing control laws were constructed to control the polymer composition and to maximize the process productivity in emulsion polymerization processes. Input to these control laws is obtained from high gain nonlinear estimators that are used to estimate the number of moles of residual monomer, and thus the polymer composition, online. The estimations are based on an online optimization calorimetric strategy. The flow rates of the different monomers are used to maintain the concentration of monomers in the reactor at some predetermined values in order to ensure the production of polymers with a desired composition in the shortest possible time.
